HİSTORİCAL SQUARES OF SHUSHA

Shusha, the cultural capital of Azerbaijan, stands out for its unique architecture and architectural style. Ancient Shusha had 3 castle gates, 3 squares, 3 streets, and 17 neighborhoods.

Elchin Ahmadov, professor of the Presidential Academy of Public Administration, and doctor of political sciences told AZERTAC that among the central squares and streets of Shusha, the name of the place called "Bazarbashı" or "Divankhana Square" should be specially mentioned.

The place called "Bazarbashı" is the first and largest city square located inside the Shusha Castle when passing through the Ganja Gate. "Divankhana Square" was the Divankhana of the Karabakh Khan, and after the placement of Russian soldiers in Shusha in 1805, it became an Orthodox church with some additions, and in the 1970s, a culture house was built on the site of the ancient Divankhana building. After the occupation of Shusha by the Armenian armed forces in 1992, the "House of Culture" was completely destroyed, and the building was destroyed. E. Ahmadov noted that the place called "Meydan" is the main city square of Shusha. The end of "Rasta Bazar" street, the main commercial highway of Shusha, ends at "Meydan", thus connecting "Meydan" and "Bazarbashı". The main architectural elements of the "Meydan" are religious and commercial buildings, which are characteristic of squares built in the cities of Azerbaijan in the 17th and 18th centuries. The place called "Ashaghi Meydan" ("Lower Square") or "Torpag Meydan" ("Soil Square") is one of the oldest city squares of Shusha city. "Ashaghi Meydan " is also popularly known as "Torpag Meydan ". The reason for this name is related to the fact that Shusha, unlike other city squares, is not paved with stones and has a soil cover. In the undated master plan of the city of Shusha, there were large public buildings adjacent to each other located on the western side of " Ashaghi Meydan". None of those buildings have survived to our time.
